Engineered hardwood done right
Engineered hardwood is real wood on top of a dimensionally stable plywood core. It looks identical to solid hardwood underfoot but won't cup, gap, or buckle when humidity shifts, a real advantage in a climate that swings between damp winters and dry summer heat. That makes it the right pick for basements, slab-on-grade homes common in newer Puget Sound construction, kitchens, and rooms with radiant heat.
Elite Northwest Flooring stocks engineered hardwood from Lauzon, Mirage, Mercier, Kahrs, Coswick, Shaw, and Armstrong, the same brands designers specify on high-end builds.

Why homeowners choose engineered hardwood
Engineered hardwood gives you most of the benefits of solid wood without the climate sensitivity.
- Stable on concrete slabs and over radiant heat
- Available in wider planks (up to 9 inches) that solid wood can't offer
- Pre-finished from the factory with aluminum-oxide topcoats
- Floating, glue-down, or nail-down installation, whichever your subfloor needs
- Refinishable once or twice depending on wear-layer thickness

Most engineered hardwood is made from European or American oak, but maple, walnut, hickory, and exotic species are all available. Plank widths run from a classic 3 inches up to designer 9-inch boards. Finishes range from clear matte to wire-brushed, hand-scraped, fumed, and reactive-stained European looks.

Professional installation
Our installers assess your subfloor first, moisture testing on concrete, joist inspection on plywood, and flatness checks everywhere, then recommend floating, glue-down, or nail-down based on what will perform best. Every quote includes baseboard removal and reinstall, transitions to adjacent rooms, and full disposal of your existing floor. If you'd rather compare it to solid hardwood or want matching stair treads, our hardwood stairs page covers that.

Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions
Yes, if the wear layer is 3mm or thicker, it can be sanded and refinished once or twice. Thinner wear layers (1-2mm) should be screened and recoated instead of fully sanded, our hardwood refinishing team can tell you which applies to your floor.
Water-resistant, not waterproof. It tolerates the occasional spill far better than solid wood, but standing water from a leak or burst pipe should still be cleaned up promptly.
Yes, this is one of engineered hardwood's biggest advantages. We follow manufacturer guidelines on subfloor temperature and acclimation to prevent gapping.
Floating is faster and easier to replace plank by plank. Glue-down feels more solid underfoot and is quieter. Over concrete we typically recommend glue-down; over plywood, either works well. We'll walk both options during your free estimate.
